Since moving to Canada three years ago, I’ve had the chance to explore many wonderful places. But nothing compares to the charm and calm I found in Ottawa. As the capital city of Canada, Ottawa offers a rich blend of culture, nature, and community. One of the things that instantly caught my attention is the abundance of green spaces throughout the city.

In fact, Ottawa is one of the greenest cities in North America. With over 4,000 hectares of parkland, it’s easy to find a peaceful corner where you can reconnect with nature. Whether you’re walking downtown or exploring the quieter suburbs, there’s always a park, riverfront trail, or hidden forest nearby.

The number one thing I enjoy doing in Ottawa is simply walking through its streets and discovering the natural scenery. From the iconic Rideau Canal, which transforms into the world’s largest skating rink in winter, to the winding paths along the Ottawa River, every step is an opportunity to enjoy Canada’s natural beauty.

When I want to go deeper into nature, I often join a local hiking group that explores Ottawa and the nearby Gatineau region. (You can check out one of our adventures in the YouTube video below.)

These hikes are a great way to connect with people, stay active, and explore lesser-known trails.

Just across the river from Ottawa is Gatineau, Quebec. Together, these twin cities form the National Capital Region, and both offer a rich mix of French and English culture, stunning landscapes, and year-round outdoor activities. Gatineau Park, in particular, is a must-visit. It features over 361 square kilometers of forests, hills, and lakes. In the fall, the park becomes a canvas of vibrant colors, drawing nature lovers and photographers from across the country.

Ottawa isn’t just a political capital — it’s also a city of trees, trails, and tranquility. Whether you’re a new resident or just visiting, make time to explore its green spaces. You’ll find more than just beautiful views — you’ll find a sense of peace and connection.
